Real needs.

A family should not be pressured to borrow before seeing itemized prices and checking insurance, prepaid arrangements, survivor or veteran resources, estate timing and community support. This page calculates only the immediate verified gap and never assumes a survivor is personally liable for the deceased person’s debts.
Define the exact expense, due date and repayment fit.

Use these three steps in order. Open a worksheet when you need to check your own figures.
Use these page-specific checks to work through inputs that can materially change the decision. They supplement the decision framework and do not predict approval or replace a lender’s written disclosures.
Just Right Loans is a free loan comparison and matching product, not a lender, funeral provider, cemetery, insurer, estate representative, government-benefits adviser or attorney. It does not determine funeral requirements, benefit eligibility, estate authority, legal liability for funeral expenses1, loan approval, APRs or fees. The funeral provider's price lists and statement, applicable contracts/law, benefit agencies and lender agreement control those matters.
Benefit eligibility and timing are separate questions. A benefit that will reimburse the family later can reduce the permanent funeral cost but may not solve the funeral home's immediate payment deadline.
Separate the cash required now from money expected later. A reimbursement or deposit refund does not solve a deadline that comes first.
Planning only. These calculations use your inputs, do not check live provider terms and do not establish approval or available funding. Nothing entered here is saved or sent to a lender.

Current evidence / rule: Check the exact contract and what goods/services are already funded; FTC Funeral Rule also applies to covered pre-need arrangements with funeral providers.
Current evidence / rule: Verify active policy, beneficiary and claim process. Beneficiary controls proceeds under policy terms; do not assume funeral home receives them directly.
Current evidence / rule: Availability depends on assets, authority and estate process; do not assume funds are immediately accessible.
Current evidence / rule: VA currently lists up to $2,000 toward burial expenses for qualifying service-connected deaths on or after Sept. 11, 2001; transportation reimbursement can apply in specified cases.
Current evidence / rule: For qualifying deaths on or after Oct. 1, 2025, VA currently lists $1,002 burial allowance and $1,002 plot allowance, subject to eligibility and burial circumstances.
Current evidence / rule: SSA currently lists a one-time $255 payment for an eligible spouse or, in some cases, eligible children; application generally must be made within 2 years.
Current evidence / rule: Check actual employer/union survivor policy and payment date.
Current evidence / rule: Programs vary by jurisdiction and financial need; no national amount should be assumed.
Current evidence / rule: Verify committed amount and date.
Current evidence / rule: Use only confirmed voluntary contributions; do not assume relatives are legally responsible.
Calculate the actual amount still needed before this deadline, after confirmed coverage, reductions, arrangements and available cash.
Each offset must be separate, confirmed and available in time. Do not subtract insurance, a discount or assistance twice. Expected money arriving later belongs in a timing/bridge calculation. A payment plan changes timing; it does not erase the debt.

This tool does not tell a family how to memorialize someone. It simply makes optional cost decisions visible so the family can choose without being pushed into debt.
Add the separately priced items and subtract confirmed offsets. Compare written totals on the same scope; deposits already included in the price are not an extra cost.

Fixed-rate, fully amortizing monthly loans only. Use the contract interest rate—not APR, which can already include fees. If supplied, the quoted monthly payment replaces the estimate. Include financed fees in principal; do not enter them again as deducted or separate fees. Balloon payments, variable rates and deferred-interest plans need the actual repayment schedule.

A funeral is a near-term expense; the debt can last years. The checks below show how long you will still be paying after the service is over.

A death can change household income at the same time the funeral bill arrives. Affordability must use you's post-death household cash flow, not the household budget from before the loss.
See how much remains after essential costs, existing debt, your chosen reserve and the new payment.
Use take-home income, not gross receipts. Include continuing care, insurance, transport, tax reserves and other costs relevant to this page. Count each expense once. For joint borrowing, test each person against the entire payment separately.

Immediate funeral gap = selected itemized costs due now - confirmed resources available by the provider deadline - cash - documented provider-plan amount shifted. Pending insurance, estate or benefit claims remain PENDING.
Illustrative calculations and states only; not offers, approval predictions, clinical/legal advice or market averages.
| Resource / cost layer | Evidence needed | Timing state | Count now? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Itemized selected services | General price list/itemized statement and family selection. | CURRENT | Yes |
| Life/burial insurance | Policy, beneficiary claim and carrier status. | PENDING / CONFIRMED DATE | Only if timely |
| Prepaid plan | Contract, covered items and provider acceptance. | VERIFY / CONFIRMED | Covered items only |
| Veteran/survivor benefit | Official eligibility, amount and payment status. | PENDING / CONFIRMED | Confirmed amount only |
| Estate/community/family funds | Authorized access or committed amount/date. | VERIFY / CONFIRMED | Confirmed only |
Only confirmed, timely resources reduce immediate gap.
Gap = immediate verified cost - confirmed timely resources.
Just Right Loans is a free loan comparison, matching and decision-support product, not a lender. We do not make credit decisions, set APRs or fees, service loans, or guarantee approval, an amount, a rate, a funding time, program access, coverage, legal outcome or treatment result. A provider or program controls eligibility, verification, credit-review methods, terms, disbursement and servicing.
Generally personal financing used for selected funeral expenses after itemization and resource review.
Request itemized price information so selected, optional and third-party charges are visible.
Yes after amount and timing are confirmed; a filed claim remains pending.
That depends on law, contracts and estate facts; do not assume liability from relationship alone.
Possibly; compare the complete written schedule, fees/interest and consequences.
Use immediate itemized cost minus confirmed pre-deadline resources and documented schedule.
Stop when itemization/resources are unresolved, pressure is present, liability is assumed or repayment fails.
Use the loan principal, contract interest rate and term to estimate monthly payments. APR can include fees and is not the same as the contract interest rate.
Actual APR, fees, payment timing and total repayment come from the provider's written disclosures. Add origination or other required fees separately where applicable.
Assumes a fixed contract interest rate, equal monthly payments and no balloon payment. Do not use fee-inclusive APR as the interest rate. A deducted fee reduces cash received; other fees and payment-date differences can change the lender’s final figures.
Continue only after the amount, usable proceeds, payment, cost, timing and repayment structure pass the page’s decision checks.
Check Loan Options →These references provide general consumer information. Confirm current eligibility, rates, fees, terms and availability directly with the lender or relevant agency.
Separate the bill from possible resources. Confirm the itemized services and who is responsible for payment. An expected insurance payout, estate distribution or family contribution may arrive later than the bill is due; keep that timing separate from the amount available now. ↩ Back to text
Confirm help before subtracting it. An assistance program or payment arrangement may have eligibility rules, limits and processing time. Count it as a confirmed resource only after verifying the amount and availability for your expense. ↩ Back to text
APR and the interest rate. APR expresses borrowing costs on an annual basis and can include required charges beyond interest. It is not the dollar amount you will repay. Compare it alongside net cash received, the repayment term and the lender’s disclosed payment schedule. ↩ Back to text
Money actually available to use. Here, net proceeds means the cash left after any amount withheld from the loan at disbursement. A $1,000 principal with a $100 deducted fee leaves $900 to use; the debt is not automatically reduced to $900. ↩ Back to text
Term versus contract terms. The loan term is the time allowed for repayment. “Terms” can also mean the complete agreement, including fees, due dates and other conditions. Changing the repayment period does not change all of those conditions automatically. ↩ Back to text
How fees affect the comparison. A fee may be deducted from the amount sent to you, financed into the balance, or paid separately. These treatments change the comparison differently. Check the written disclosure and count each charge once. ↩ Back to text
