Moving Loans:
Build the Full Relocation Gap Before You Finance

A move can combine carrier charges, deposits, travel, storage, utility setup, missed work and housing overlap. Normalize quotes, verify carrier versus broker status, separate reimbursements that arrive later from cash available now, and test the first month after arrival.

A clear starting point

From the cost to your next step

Use these three steps in order. Open a worksheet when you need to check your own figures.

  1. Build the relocation budgetInclude deposits, transport and overlapping housing costs in the written budget.
  2. Confirm available resourcesSeparate usable savings and confirmed support from money that has not arrived.
  3. Check the first monthsTest repayment against housing costs and income timing after the move.

Your planning tools

Check your own figures

Use these page-specific checks to work through inputs that can materially change the decision. They supplement the decision framework and do not predict approval or replace a lender’s written disclosures.

Employer Relocation & Reimbursement Offset

Live results from your figures.
Open

Employer relocation support can reduce the amount that needs financing, but the cash timing and tax treatment matter. IRS Publication 15-B for 2026 states that the general exclusion for qualified moving-expense reimbursements from employee income has been permanently eliminated, with specific exceptions for qualifying active-duty Armed Forces permanent-change-of-station moves and qualifying intelligence-community relocations.

Separate the cash required now from money expected later. A reimbursement or deposit refund does not solve a deadline that comes first.

Planning only. These calculations use your inputs, do not check live provider terms and do not establish approval or available funding. Nothing entered here is saved or sent to a lender.

Refund & Cash-Timing Bridge

Live results from your figures.
Open

Moves often create a timing problem rather than a permanent cost. Old security deposits, employer reimbursements and the first paycheck may arrive after deposits and mover payments are due. This comparison separates permanent expenses from temporary bridge needs.

Separate the cash required now from money expected later. A reimbursement or deposit refund does not solve a deadline that comes first.

True Moving Financing Gap

Open

Calculate the actual amount still needed before this deadline, after confirmed coverage, reductions, arrangements and available cash.

Each offset must be separate, confirmed and available in time. Do not subtract insurance, a discount or assistance twice. Expected money arriving later belongs in a timing/bridge calculation. A payment plan changes timing; it does not erase the debt.

Enter the terms of two or more offers. See monthly payments, cash received, total scheduled payments and borrowing cost side by side.

Fixed-rate, fully amortizing monthly loans only. Use the contract interest rate—not APR, which can already include fees. If supplied, the quoted monthly payment replaces the estimate. Include financed fees in principal; do not enter them again as deducted or separate fees. Balloon payments, variable rates and deferred-interest plans need the actual repayment schedule.

First-Month After-Move Stress Test

Live results from your figures.
Open

A move can temporarily double housing costs and delay the first paycheck. Affordability should be tested against the first 30-60 days after relocation, not only you's normal future budget.

See how much remains after essential costs, existing debt, your chosen reserve and the new payment.

Use take-home income, not gross receipts. Include continuing care, insurance, transport, tax reserves and other costs relevant to this page. Count each expense once. For joint borrowing, test each person against the entire payment separately.

  • Total vs bridge
    Example inputs
Total move $6,100; cash $1,100; employer reimbursement $1,800 after payroll; refund $900 after move-out.
    What this means for you
Immediate bridge is $5,000; ultimate net cost after confirmed late offsets is $2,300.
  • Quote normalization
    Example inputs
    Mover A $3,200 nonbinding, packing excluded; B $3,750 binding, packing/stairs included.
    What this means for you
Compare option A only after the scope, additional charges and provider role are clear.
  • Diy true cost
    Example inputs
    Truck $980; fuel/tolls $440; lodging $260; supplies $170; insurance $95; missed work $420; labor $360.
    What this means for you
Modeled DIY cost is $2,725 before contingency.
  • Fee gross-up
    Example inputs
Immediate gap $3,200; 6% deducted fee requires $3,404.26 principal.
    What this means for you
A $3,200 principal would leave the move short.
  • First-month fail
    Example inputs
New rent, commute, childcare and loan payment leave no buffer2 until a full paycheck.

Frequently asked questions

What can a moving loan cover?

A permitted general personal loan may cover relocation costs; exact restrictions and net proceeds control.

Should deposit and first month be included?

Yes when they are relocation costs; ongoing arrears belong on the rent page.

How do I compare mover quotes?

Normalize scope, estimate type, carrier/broker role, accessorials, delivery and payment terms.

Does reimbursement reduce today’s gap?

Only if available before the payment deadline.

Is DIY always cheaper?

No; include all cash, labor, time and risk costs.

How much should I borrow?

Use the immediate pre-deadline gap, then test the first month after arrival.

When should I stop?

Stop when the entity, estimate, timing or first-month budget is unsafe/incomplete.

Actual APR, fees, payment timing and total repayment come from the provider's written disclosures. Add origination or other required fees separately where applicable.

Notes & explanations

  1. Use the time money becomes usable. The relevant time is when funds can actually be used for the expense, not when an application is submitted or a decision arrives. Confirm the time zone, lender cutoff and receiving institution’s availability rules. ↩ Back to text

  2. Keep a reserve separate from the payment. A reserve is money kept for uncertain expenses or uneven income. The amount is a household planning choice, not a universal lender requirement. Do not treat every remaining dollar as automatically available for debt repayment. ↩ Back to text

  3. Keep the scope and price together. An estimate should identify what is included, what might be billed separately and when payment is due. Financing an incomplete quote can leave a second cash gap even after the loan is funded. ↩ Back to text

  4. Term versus contract terms. The loan term is the time allowed for repayment. “Terms” can also mean the complete agreement, including fees, due dates and other conditions. Changing the repayment period does not change all of those conditions automatically. ↩ Back to text

  5. Money actually available to use. Here, net proceeds means the cash left after any amount withheld from the loan at disbursement. A $1,000 principal with a $100 deducted fee leaves $900 to use; the debt is not automatically reduced to $900. ↩ Back to text

  6. How fees affect the comparison. A fee may be deducted from the amount sent to you, financed into the balance, or paid separately. These treatments change the comparison differently. Check the written disclosure and count each charge once. ↩ Back to text

★★★★★

Did what I needed

I was honestly just comparing options because moving ended up costing more than I planned. My score isn't where I want it yet, so I paid close attention to every detail. I actually wrote the payment down and looked at my budget first. No huge promises, just information I could actually use.

★★★★★

Simple on my phone

For context, moving ended up costing more than I planned. That's why I checked Just Right Loans. I cared more about the payment than the biggest amount I could get. The payment was the part I kept coming back to. I was relieved it didn't turn into a whole ordeal.

★★★★★

Clear repayment info

Not gonna lie, I was stressed because moving ended up costing more than I planned. Pretty painless on the application side. I took a few minutes and compared the cost with another option I had open. I had one question and the person I spoke with explained it without talking over me. I wish one part of the cost breakdown was bigger on mobile. It felt practical, which is what I needed.

★★★★★

Worth comparing

Not gonna lie, I was stressed because moving ended up costing more than I planned. The application itself was pretty simple. The person I dealt with didn't make me feel dumb for asking a basic question. Overall I felt like I could make the decision without being pushed.

★★★★★

Helpful when I needed it

I wasn't planning on applying for anything, but moving ended up costing more than I planned. The online part was easier than I expected. I stopped for about twenty minutes to check my bank account and came back. Simple enough, and honestly that was all I wanted.
